Bring on the bling

By KEE HUA CHEE

Jewellery that tells a story.

WHY settle for the usual boring jewellery that every Tom, Dick and Harriet has when you can tailor-make your own?

Despite claiming to be a “limited edition” piece, someone else is bound to have the exact same thing. But your made-to-measure La Storia bracelet or necklace from OE Fine Jewellery is exclusively your own.

No duplicate, no clone, no pliers, no bleeding thumb, no fuss! It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to assemble this unique, one-off piece of jewellery. In fact it takes only minutes to assemble and the hardest part is making up your mind which beads to use.

There are over 200 different beads of various sizes, shades and shapes, giving the wearer a visual feast. The beads are a mixture of coloured glass beads, enamel, silver or gold plated squares that feature numbers, letters, symbols and all sorts of traditional lucky icons that you can mix and match.

“With so many choices, the permutations of possible combinations run into the millions so each trinket you design will be exclusive to you,” says general manager Ong Li Dong, who heads the homegrown jewellery company.

“Everyone is different, and likes different styles and colours. With La Storia, the choices are mind-boggling and it’s so much fun deciding which beads will form your bracelet or necklace. Or be different and wear it around your ankle!”

The word ‘Love’ is spelt out in this bracelet.

“La Storia” means “the story” in Italian and this flexibility allows you to tell your own story in jewellery form.

“You can use La Storia to tell the magical moments of your life or to mark a milestone or celebration,” continues Ong. “You can make a bracelet that contains the date of your birth, anniversary, wedding, graduation, promotion, first child or the figures on your first pay check!”

Some may prefer to wear their name or that of their spouse, children, lover or home town. Or you could make a message like “I Love You” to give to your nearest and dearest, or even a motto, phrase or initial. The names can be read from every angle since all the four sides has the letter.

“Then, pile on other beads which could be your lucky numbers or oriental charms like Double Happiness, Mystic Knot, Longevity, lotus or traditional western ones like the four-leaf clover, horse shoe or heart.

“La Storia even has the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. Wear your animal sign or wear all 12! Create your lucky bling and see what happens,” he adds.

The more esoteric may just wish to insert a secret code which only the recipient will understand and appreciate.

Eye-catching: Necklace which incorporates gold and silver.

“Over time you may end up accumulating many beads since they are so affordable. This allows you to change your bracelet, anklet or necklace all the time as you play with various beads and create a brand new look each time. It takes minutes to change by adding, removing or rearranging the beads.

“The Murano glass beads come in many colours and you can match them to go with your dress. If you wear a red outfit then include red-splashed beads for a charmingly co-ordinated look. The more adventurous and funky can wear two to six bracelets at one go!” says Ong.

The current face of La Storia is Jennifer Too (daughter of feng shui master Lillian Too) who can be seen modelling the jewellery in the brand’s campaign.

Designer beads start from RM68 onwards, and solid gold or platinum beads can be made to order.
